Who We Are
Small World Vision was founded by a team of passionate clinicians dedicated to eliminating childhood blindness. Our chief goal is the elimination of blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity by the year 2030.
Based out of Austin, Texas, we conduct research and provide education, technology and services directly to hospitals and colleagues in the US, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Our roadmap includes supplying appropriate medical oxygen equipment, providing education, and conducting primary research.
ROP and similar childhood blindness conditions are preventable. If the eye is the lamp of the soul, then we have the power in our hands to turn on the light for children everywhere.
Our Founder
Clio Armitage Harper III, MD, or just ‘Armie’ to his friends, is a force of nature.
During his last year of a four-year residency in ophthalmology, Dr. Harper’s wife went into pre-term labor with their first child at 20 weeks, a death sentence for the baby, both then and now. Miraculously, after being hospitalized for 15 weeks, she delivered a healthy six-pound baby girl at 39 weeks of age. Dr. Harper was so moved by this that he made a lifelong commitment to spending his life saving the eyesight of babies.
Dr. Harper has been a driving force in the growth of Austin Retina Associates, the largest retina practice in Central Texas. He is Chief of Ophthalmology at Seton Medical Center in Austin and a Clinical Associate Professor at the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute, University of Texas, Dell Medical School. As the founder of Small World Vision, Dr. Harper is an internationally-recognized expert on Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), and has been relentless in his drive to help save the sight of premature babies in the US and the developing world.
